KIRKLAND, AZ

CEMETERY

Research is being completed on those interred in the Kirkland Cemetery. Little remains today and except with a trained eye you would very likely not recognize the graves.

APCRP has further documentation there were single graves in and about Kirkland, some on family ranches that we are also researching.

Initial research identifies 6 to 8 visible graves and normally an equal amount of unmarked graves may be present.

Directions by: Pat Ryland APCRP Booster

Coming north from Kirkland Junction/Hwy 89 into Kirkland you would come to a stop sign. You can go straight or turn right & go to Prescott. So you would go straight, going across the RR tracks & turn right (east) on the short gray road. Just to your left will be the Kirkland School. Driving really slow you will get to the east fence of the school where there's an alleyway & turn left there keeping the blue house on your right. Follow the alley back to the white house, it's about 1/2 block, & keep going until you're behind the house. On your left will be a wooden garden gate that you can walk thru to get behind the school. I turned around in the back yard of the white house & parked by the wooden gate (it's a very small area). Then I walked thru the gate & right in front is a hill which after I thought for a moment about whether I should go right or left I walked to the left of the hill ( to the right looking a to be too small of an area for a cemetery).

I walked in the wash as close to the hill as I could stay cause there's so much catsclaw & figuring the cemetery wouldn't be in the wash I kept scanning the hill until I saw what looked like an old fence & walked up the hill approximately 75 ft. It's only about a block from the wooden gate to the cemetery. Just north of the cemetery was a good dirt road with power lines along it & I thought to myself that it would be much easier to get to the cemetery that way & parking for more cars if a bunch of us ever went.

I came west on the gray line that says Railroad Ave & turned right on Hillside Rd (the red line/highway) going slowly trying to find a likely road off to the right. I went about a mile maybe a little farther where I got to the entrance of Ruger Ranches, which looked pretty promising. Of course the sign by the (fancy) gate said residents & guests only but figured I was the guest of the cemetery so proceeded on. The gate would be on the right (east) side of the road about where that loop road is on the west side on your map. The name of the road that enters the gate is Centerfire Rd & I followed it across the hills until I got where I wanted to be, with a few side road detours to see where I was in relation to the Kirkland school. From the gate to the cemetery was 1.5 miles. Hope this helps.

Want to add to the Kirkland Cemetery instructions that if you go into the cemetery from the school side that you would have to stop by the school office for permission because the alley & where I parked behind the house is school property. It's much easier to go through the Ruger Ranches property.

Either way, the cemetery is on private property, DO NOT TRESPASS.

ACCESS UPDATE 7/16/08  Kirkland Cemetery

Just to let you know, the back way in to the cemetery on Centerfire Road now has an electronic gate so the only access is through the Kirkland Elementary School.
