Based on a population
of 5,000 residents during the peak production, potentially there could be as
many as 500 plus graves at Vulture. With the exception of the Verde Flat
Cemetery, believed to have 200 plus graves (100 marked with white crosses, one
grave with a marker) some are single graves, some are clustered together with
no more that 2 to 10 graves.
The largest
concentration besides the Verde Flat Cemetery is 51 graves behind the Boarding
House, believed to have an affiliation with participants of the Hanging Tree
which is a short distance away. There seems to be no formal pattern, layout or
organization to these graves.
Additionally
across the road to the south are additional graves believed to be buried in the
yards of residents who lived in this area. Possible 300 scattered graves in
this location, more research is required.
Many
unmarked graves have been identified but to date there is no documentation to
be able to identify who is buried in these numerous graves that scatter the
landscape at the Vulture Mine.
